Start with the restorations you prescribe most
List the restorations that make up most of your laboratory work — for example single zirconia crowns, implant crowns, bridges or removable partial dentures — and confirm the laboratory makes each of them routinely.
Ask which materials are offered for each restoration and when each is recommended. A laboratory that explains the trade-offs between, say, full-contour and layered zirconia is easier to plan cases with.
Check how cases are received
If you use an intraoral scanner, confirm the laboratory accepts files from your system and agree how they are sent. If you take conventional impressions, agree on pickup or shipping and on how models and bite registrations are handled.
- Accepted scan formats and how to send them
- How physical impressions and models are collected
- For implants: which systems, platforms and components are supported
Communication and turnaround
Good laboratories ask questions before they manufacture. Agree on a contact person, how design questions will reach you and how turnaround times are confirmed for each restoration type.
Be wary of a single fixed turnaround for every case: an implant bridge and a single crown rarely take the same time.
Quality control and documentation
Ask what is checked before a restoration leaves the laboratory — typically fit on the model, contacts, occlusion, margins and shade — and how the prescription is matched to the finished work.
Documentation matters after delivery too. A warranty record that states the restoration type, issue date and expiry date makes later discussions with the patient straightforward.
Warranty and remakes
Read the warranty terms before the first case: which restorations are covered, for how long, what is excluded and how a claim is made. Warranty periods usually differ by restoration type.
Location and logistics
For conventional impressions, distance affects how quickly cases move between the clinic and the laboratory. For digital cases, location matters less, but it still helps to be able to visit the laboratory or speak to the technician working on a complex case.
