- Prepare to the minimum thickness specified for the chosen zirconia or ceramic, with rounded internal line angles.
- Send the stump shade as well as the target shade — the prepared tooth affects translucent materials.
- Full-contour zirconia suits most posterior crowns; layered options give more characterisation for anterior teeth.
- Polish or re-glaze zirconia after any occlusal adjustment to protect the opposing teeth.
- Zirconia is not etched with hydrofluoric acid: cement conventionally or bond after air abrasion and an MDP-containing primer, per the cement manufacturer.
Limitations to discuss with your patient
- Highly translucent zirconias trade some strength for aesthetics.
- Veneering porcelain on layered restorations can chip under heavy loads.
